Naturopathic Medicine

with Dr. Janene Martin, ND

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a model of health care in which treatment is focused on disease prevention and supporting the body’s natural abilities to heal. The least invasive and most holistic modalities are the first choice.

The ultimate goal and focus of treatment is to successfully identify and treat the cause of the disease rather than suppressing the body’s symptoms, which are signs of a disharmony and not the disease itself.

The naturopathic approach often requires the physician to educate the patient about their lifestyle choices as well as their physiology.

Licensed Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are trained to diagnose and treat all chronic and acute health conditions. Naturopathic Doctors are trained in conventional diagnostic techniques such as physical exams, laboratory testing, differential diagnosis, x-ray and ultrasound imaging, and psychological assessment. In addition, NDs use specialized laboratory tests that assess physiological function, as well as other observational and physical techniques. NDs endeavor to identify disease states in the context of the individual’s overall health.

Before becoming a patient of Dr. Janene Martin you will meet with the doctor for a Case Review.

* All naturopathic providers in Maryland are not trained equally. Naturopaths in Maryland should have completed 4-year, federally accredited medical programs, passed a series of rigorous medical board examinations, and hold a medical license in licensable states.

What to expect as a patient of Dr. Janene Martin…

As my patient you will receive very thorough and individualized attention to your health and well being. You can expect to be a priority.

I take great care to collect detailed information from you through both written history and verbal conversations, physical exams, and pertinent laboratory work-up, as well as any relevant previous medical records. New Patient appointments last approximately 2 hours.

The first follow-up visit is a “Review of Findings” appointment lasting approximately 2 hours. After careful examination of all your collected information I will present you with a clear treatment plan with goals and how we will monitor your progress.

Note: This plan may vary when a new patient is faced with acute conditions. In such a circumstance a thorough history of the acute symptoms and only pertinent physical exams will be performed. Treatment will be given within that same appointment. After the acute situation has been properly managed, follow-up visits will be scheduled to address the factors that led to the acute condition.

Not all health issues are straightforward. People often come to see me after working with other health practitioners and failing to achieve the results they want or need. I enjoy taking the time to thoroughly assess your health history and put it all together.

I don’t pretend to have all of the answers. It is my job to know where to look and to keep looking until we figure it out. It is your job to fully participate in your process.

You can expect very personalized attention. I appreciate your questions and updates on how you are doing. After you leave my office your health is still being considered.
